Answer both parts below:
Compare the views expressed in Michael Kimmel’s essay “Bros Before Hos: The Guy Code”(Links to an external site.) (pages 44 — 57)to the arguments expressed in his TED Talk “Why Gender Equality is Good for Everyone, Men Included” (Links to an external site.)? How do the TED Talk and the article reinforce one another?
Kimmel writes that masculinity is “constantly policed” by other men–that men are always pressured to prove they conform to what is expected of men, which can be very limiting. To what extent do you think Kimmel’s rules reflect current social notions of what it means to be a man?Do you find his arguments persuasive? Why or why not? Can you think of any examples (perhaps in media) that might contradict or support those views? Give examples from your own experience. Do you think men pressure other men to maintain certain male gender stereotypes?
- For example, the notion that men must be aggressive and not show emotion? Provide any examples you can think of from your own experience or something you have seen in media (advertisements, television, film, music, etc.)
WRITE AT LEAST 300 WORDS IN YOUR RESPONSE, AND REPLY TO AT LEAST ONE OTHER STUDENT’S POST.
