This week we took some time to analyze and understand Darwinian evolution/natural selection, as well as the rise of Social-Darwinism and Eugenics. Consider these questions. in relation to the videos, and reading material.
- What is the difference, or differences, between Darwinism and Social-Darwinism, how do Social-Darwinists apply Darwinian theory to their own theories about the world?
- What seems to be the ultimate point, or goal, for Social-Darwinist thinkers, like Madison Grant and Lothrop Stoddard?
- What are the connections between Social-Darwinism and Eugenics? And why is Margaret Sanger’s groundbreaking work, Family Limitation, considered part of the wider eugenics movement?
- Lastly, why do you believe this period of the late 1880s and into the 1930s saw the rise of such “sciences” and programs as Social-Darwinism and eugenics?
